Support for vulnerable in Arfon to continue as shielding officially ends.

Volunter-run schemes praised by local MP and MS during community visits.

The work of community-led Covid-19 support schemes which have provided food and essential supplies to the elderly and vulnerable across Arfon during lockdown is set to continue, despite government shielding guidance officially ending this week.

The continuation of the volunteer-led schemes has been welcomed by Plaid Cymru MP Hywel Williams and MS Siân Gwenllian. They visited two of the local initiatives but they are aware of other similar schemes serving other communities in Arfon. Plaid Bangor Foodshare scheme, Porthi Pawb in Caernarfon are only two of the many community projects being applauded by the politicians ...

The Plaid Bangor Food Share scheme has been distributing food thrice weekly from the Plaid Cymru constituency office on the high street, coordinated by local Cllr Steve Collings.

Porthi Pawb has been supporting people in Caernarfon, delivering hot meals and has recently expanded to provide free meals for kids during the holidays.

Hywel Williams MP and Siân Gwenllian MS said,

‘We warmly welcome news that these community food schemes will continue with their fantastic work beyond the official ending of shielding.'

'Despite the easing of lockdown, many people remain apprehensive about venturing out to crowded places such as supermarkets, so the continuation of door to door meals, food parcels and deliveries will provide much needed reassurance.’

‘These schemes have been a lifeline for many of our most vulnerable constituents, to those who have been shielding for health reasons, and to those who may be struggling financially because of the pandemic.’

‘What unites these individual schemes is a collective desire to help people, particularly those who are elderly, vulnerable or simply in need of a little extra support during these tough times.’

'These community initiatives have sprung-up across the constituency as a compassionate and caring response to the pandemic and it has been heartening to see local people pulling together and supporting each other.'

Having seen for ourselves the work involved in setting up and coordinating these schemes, it is only fitting that those who continue to give their time and effort to help their communities are publicly applauded for doing so.’

Coordinator and Chef at Porthi Pawb, Chris Summers said,

‘I am so pleased that Porthi Pawb has secured additional funding to enable us to continue providing a door to door meal service for the people of Caernarfon, including meals for children over the holidays.’

‘The support we’ve received since the scheme was established has been extraordinary. I’d like to thank all those local groups, organisations and individuals who’ve supported us, not to mention our dedicated team of volunteers, without who’s support, none of this would have been possible.’
