Arfon Assembly Member calls for more support for local businesses

On Small Business Saturday (Dec 3) Arfon Assembly Member Siân Gwenllian is encouraging shoppers to shop locally, to increase the footfall in our town centres at a time when shopping out of town or online is so popular.

“Small and medium-sized businesses are vital to the Welsh economy,” said Siân Gwenllian.

“They keep money circulating locally, they are more likely to use local services and to employ locally too.

They are the backbone of the rural economy. I am very disappointed that the present tax system puts an unfair pressure on small businesses who have a presence in Wales, as opposed to other areas of the UK.”

Siân Gwenllian visited a small business in Llanberis near Caernarfon in order to promote local shopping. Tan y Ddraig’s ceramic cafe on the Llanberis high street offers customers the opportunity to paint their own crockery, be it plates or other ornaments.

The shop takes children’s parties, hen parties and groups of people of any age and artistic skill who enjoy being creative and who would like a unique gift to take home.

“It was very interesting speaking to Juliet Bennett the proprietor of Tan y Ddraig,” said Siân Gwenllian.

“She is a potter who makes her own produce in the back of the shop and people can book to decorate the plates as they please as something for themselves or as a unique gift.

There was a lovely atmosphere in the shop, and it is a great business to have on the high street in Llanberis. It’s an ideal to place to take children this Christmas for some festive craft.”
