Ogwen Valley’s new electric car named

The electric car is part of the exciting Dyffryn Gwyrdd initiative

'E-Fan' is the name given to Ogwen Valley’s news electric car, which is part of the area's Dyffryn Gwyrdd project.

The new name is a play-on-words, inspired by the Welsh name 'Efan', as well as giving a nod to the eco-friendly qualities of the new electric car.

Two other vehicles were named Car-nedd and Try-fan, making use of local mountain names.

The names were announced at a special ceremony at Llys Dafydd last week, attended by representatives of the Dyffryn Gwyrdd initiative, pupils of the school, as well as Sian Gwenllian MS, the area’s representative in the Senedd.

Dyffryn Gwyrdd was set up with the aim of tackling community issues affecting the Ogwen Valley, including the climate crisis, loneliness, and fuel poverty.

But there is hope that the new electric car will tackle a very specific challenge affecting the area, rural transport poverty.

The electric car will be a community car (eg it can be used to attend hospital appointments) as well as ensuring that around 25 meals-on-wheels are delivered weekly.

Siân Gwenllian, who represents the area in the Welsh Parliament as well as being Plaid Cymru's Education spokesperson, attended the car naming ceremony.

She said;

“I was pleased to attend the official opening of the Dyffryn Gwyrdd’s hub on Bethesda High Street a few weeks ago, and it's great to see the innovative’s work go from strength so strength.

“There is a strong co-operative, community spirit in the Ogwen Valley, and initiatives, projects, and volunteering opportunities continue to sprout across the valley.

“It's great to see the spirit of unity that emerged during the pandemic extend beyond Covid.

“It is particularly encouraging to see the emphasis of projects such as the electric car on sustainability, especially given the unprecedented challenge that we face in the form of climate change.

"Above all, it was wonderful to see the enthusiasm of the young people."

Dyffryn Gwyrdd is a green project by Partneriaeth Ogwen. Partneriaeth Ogwen is a social enterprise working for the economy, environment and communities of the Ogwen Valley.
