Further delays to A55 flood prevention scheme 'unacceptable' say local AM and MP

Plaid Cymru Member of Parliament for Arfon Hywel Williams and Assembly Member Siân Gwenllian have called on the Welsh Government to provide a full explanation as to why planned measures to prevent repeated flooding on the A55 in Abergwyngregyn have still not begun.

Work to mitigate flooding between J12 and J13 of the dual carriageway was meant to start earlier in the autumn. Yesterday’s flooding saw the part closure of the carriageway between Tal Meibion and Abergwyngregyn, a stretch prone to heavy flooding.

Hywel Williams MP said,

“Yet again, the A55 dual carriageway between Tai Meibion and Abergwyngregyn has been closed, causing severe travel problems for motorists.”

“Whilst I welcome the much-anticipated and recently completed flood alleviation scheme at Talybont, brought about by pressure from local people, this recurring problem on the A55 remains unresolved.”

“We were told by the Welsh Government that work to mitigate recurring flooding on the A55 was due to begin this autumn. But here we are, a few weeks short of Christmas and we’re still waiting for a start date.”

“People are rightly fed up with persistent flooding on this westwards stretch of the A55. Had this been the M4 in the south, I’m sure remedial action would have been taken sooner.”

“We need assurances from the Welsh Labour Government that work to prevent further flooding on the A55 will begin in earnest. Motorists in north Wales cannot wait any longer.”

Siân Gwenllian AM said,

“I call on the Welsh Government to start work immediately on emergency flood prevention measures between J12 and J13 on the A55 - work that should have started by now.”

“This work would have prevented last night's floods and further delays with implementing the necessary improvements are clearly unacceptable. I will be seeking an explanation for this delay.”
