Plaid Cymru Member of Parliament for Arfon Hywel Williams and Assembly Member Siân Gwenllian have held an urgent meeting with Gwynedd Council to pass on concerns expressed by constituents about changes to the local bus service timetable.
Both Hywel Williams MP and Siân Gwenllian AM have been contacted by many constituents concerned with changes to the local bus timetable, which has left some communities in Arfon with substantially reduced services.
Particular concerns have been raised about services in Dyffryn Nantlle, Carmel, Fron, Penisarwaun, Deiniolen, Nebo, Groeslon and parts of Caernarfon.
Both Hywel Williams and Siân Gwenllian were assured that the Council is taking positive steps to plan a long term, sustainable solution.
In a joint statement Hywel Williams MP and Siân Gwenllian AM said,
‘Over the past week we have been contacted by many constituents who are understandably concerned about recent changes to the local bus timetable.’
‘In light of these concerns we met with Gwynedd Council to pass on the specific issues which have arisen following the curtailment of certain services in Arfon, services which many rely on to go about their daily lives.’
‘The situation has arisen because one of the major local bus providers has lost its operating license. Despite efforts by the Council, there is not at present sufficient capacity from other operators.’
‘We have been assured the cuts to services are not driven by financial motives. In fact, we understand that providing bus services in Gwynedd is now costing the Council an extra £400,000.’
‘We acknowledge the work undertaken by Gwynedd Council to plug the gaps in service left by the termination of Express Motors’ licence and we are working with the Council as we move forward towards a more sustainable arrangement.’
