Plaid Cymru Member of Parliament for Arfon, Hywel Williams has urged mobile providers to do all that is necessary to improve mobile coverage at one of north west Wales’ largest business parks as some tenants consider re-locating.
The Arfon MP was handed a report by tenants at Parc Menai, Bangor cataloguing a long list of network problems faced by businesses and workers on site. The report concluded that over 90% of respondents have poor or no service at all. Over 60% of respondents said that having no service was adversely affecting their business.
Hywel Williams MP has now taken up the matter with the two main network providers, EE and Vodafone, seeking assurances that the local network will be upgraded as soon as possible.
Hywel Williams MP said,
‘Businesses and individuals operating from Parc Menai are clearly being put at a disadvantage as a result of recurrent problems with the mobile phone network.’
‘In today’s fast-paced digital world, the ability to do business over the phone is essential. The perennial lack of mobile service in Parc Menai is having a significant bearing on the park’s desirability as a centre for business.’
‘I have taken this matter up with network providers, impressing upon them the need to get on and improve the local mobile network in and around Parc Menai.’
‘For Parc Menai to develop as a hub for innovative, technology-led businesses, it is imperative that employers and stakeholders are able to access a fast and reliable mobile service. It’s not a big ask.’
Tamsin Slinn who works at Parc Menai and who compiled the report said,
‘Having experienced phone service problems at work for some time, I did a survey to see how many people across the Business Park had the same problem.’
‘I found that around 90% of people have little or no mobile phone service and there is no 4G coverage at all. This simply isn't good enough for a business park.’
‘It is holding back local businesses through increased costs and missed opportunities and making it harder for them to present a professional image to customers from outside the area.’
